Tutor: Julie Holt

Julie Holt is a PMC Studio accredited Senior PMC Instructor and an experienced tutor, who holds the CIPD certificate in Learning & Development and PTLLS Certificate in Adult Education. Julie is also a successful jewellery designer who sells her own jewellery under the label of Mode Bellus. As a teacher her aim is to teach others to make their own jewellery using tried and tested techniques.

 

Course: Precious Metal Clay Jewellery

General course; suitable for beginners and those with some experience. During the course you will be able to make a small pendant or several charms to your own design. You will learn how to roll, texture and cut the clay. Once you have made your design you will refine your piece prior to firing and polishing.

Course: Certification Module A

New Style Certification Programme for those who have completed the Introduction to Precious Metal Clay course or have previous experience in using metal clay.

Projects/Techniques        

    • Band ring – Learn how to make a strong, durable ring that will withstand daily wear.
    • Decorated bead - Make a stunning solid decorated bead.
    • Stud Earrings – Combine the beauty of PMC with the strength of Sterling Silver to create a pair of earrings.

    *Clay allowance: 16g PMC3 and a PMC3 Paste

    Course: Certification Module B

    New Style Certification Programme for those who have completed the Introduction to Precious Metal Clay course or have previous experience in using metal clay.

    Projects/Techniques

    • Textured pendant - Includes creating your own moulds and simple gemstone setting.
    • Domed bead/pendant - Make a hollow bead using our dry construction technique. Can also be worn as a pendant.
    • Ceramic or glass cabouchon - Combine ready fired ceramics or glass cabouchons with PMC to make an unusual pendant.

    Extended Certification

    Module 2 - High finish

    This module is about achieving a professional finish.
    Learn the tricks of the trade to achieve this all of the time on all work.

    1. Japanese enamels - An introduction to using fine Japanese hot enamels.
    2. High shine mirror finish - Learn to polish your PMC so you can see your own reflection in your work.
    3. Ring with bezel setting - Create a silver bezel in PMC to create a setting for items that cannot be fired.
    4. Ceramics - Combine PMC with bisque to create a beautiful solid decorated bead.
    5. Ceramics - Combine ready fired ceramics with PMC.
    6. PMC 22K Gold - Learn to combine PMC gold with Silver.

    Module 3 - Innovative design

    This module is about Incorporating new elements into your PMC.

    1. Dry construction open box bead with 24K gold - Create an open box bead and decorate using the Korean technique of Keum Boo.
    2. Syringe drawing - Master the syringe to create intricate, detailed designs that are structurally sound.
    3. Photopolymer printing - Make your own re-usable stamps for adding texture to your PMC pieces.
    4. Chain making - Make strong textured chain with PMC.
    5. Ring with natural gemstone set in PMC - Enhance your rings with a natural gemstone.
    6. PMC and Sterling Silver – Learn to combine PMC with Sterling Silver without the need for soldering.
    7. Colour effects on PMC - Use Liver of Sulphur to create different colours effects on PMC.

    Module 1 - Naturals

    This module looks at using the natural, clay like Properties of Precious Metal Clay and combining them with natural, organic materials such as leaves, twigs & pods.

    1. Natural materials - Use a leaf or pod to create a stunning pendant. 
    2. Textured pendant - Includes creating your own moulds and simple gemstone setting.
    3. Glass pendant - Learn to set a glass cabochon in PMC and fire allowing for the shrinkage.
    4. Band ring – Learn how to make a strong, durable ring that will withstand daily wear.
    5. Decorative clasp - Create a two part clasp combining PMC and Silver wire.
    6. Domed bead - Make a hollow bead using dry construction techniques. Can also be worn as a pendant.
    7. Hollow free form - Use wood clay to create any shape hollow form.
