PMC Metal was originally created by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation in Japan and is a unique product which is both quick and easy to use. PMC Metal is an easy way to produce exceptional quality solid, hallmarkable silver - a higher Silver at .999 content than normal UK Sterling Silver at .925, to make jewellery and gifts.
PMC Metal initially looks and feels just like regular clay but once water and a non-toxic organic binder are mixed with extremely fine particles of silver, magic begins to take place! The result of this process is a material that can be used just like clay - rolled, stretched, cast and thrown on a wheel but once it has been ‘fired’ by using either a hand held torch (or kiln); the water and binder will disappear. All you need to do then to be left with a unique piece of high quality silver is give it a brush.
Because PMC Metal can be easily moulded or sculpted, it is ideal to create patterns and textures, which in turn makes it absolutely ideal to create new forms of jewellery. Another positive benefit of using PMC Metal is its ability to be re-fired on several different occasions. The huge bonus from this is that if you don’t like the result of the original firing process, you have the ability to change it as many times as you like without ever compromising or weakening the structure of the finished product.
A significant number of the country’s top jewellery designers will testify to the limitless design possibilities offered by the use of PMC Metal. This has revolutionised the jewellery design business and has solidified the position of PMC Metal as the most exciting and innovative form of silver in the last century.
There are 4 different generations of PMC Metal, all of which have possess distinctly different properties making them well suited to different tasks. These are listed below in chronological order:
